Challenges

Ondo, a south-west Nigerian state answers to the slogan “The Sunshine State”, but has millions of its people trapped in darkness. For decades upon decades, a remote village in the state has been suffering from zero electricity supply as the Nigerian national grid falls short of providing reliable electricity. The power issue cripples Nigeria’s economic development and paralyzes people’s normal life.

Solutions

Such an urgent situation stimulates the need for an alternative independent energy solution. As a one-stop power solution supplier, TBB Renewable won the tender of this project and worked with local partner to build up a mini-grid system to utilize the abundant solar energy for power supply.

Since no electricity is provided from the public grid, a continuous off-grid power supply was called for both days and nights to sustatin villagers’s daily life. Taking account of the fact, TBB Renewable designed the AC+DC Coupled PV mini-grid system, which can utilize the solar energy to power loads directly in high efficiency in the daytime and charge the battery for night use. The whole day power supply is guaranteed to the maximum extent.

The project comprises:

• 6 x 8kW Kinergier Pro inverter chargers connected in parallel and three-phase - 48kW
• 2 x 15kW PV inverters for AC Coupled configuration - 30kW
• 3 x Solar Mate 250V/100A MPPT solar charge controllers for DC Coupled configuration
• 40 x TBB LS50 Lithium Batteries (48V/2.4kWh each) - 96kW
• 7 x IP65 Power Rack cabinets for mounting the lithium batteries
• 50kW PV panels
• 1 * Kinergy Wireless Data Logger to transmit real-time system data to the NOVA APP & Web for remote monitoring 

Benefits

This 48kW mini-grid system provides independent and reliable energy 24 hours a day, basically meeting the electricity demand of local 500 households and bringing them bright, hope and better living conditions.

6 units of 8kW TBB Kinergier Pro inverter chargers, featuring high-efficiency up to 96%, are the key modules in this project. Combined with PV inverters, the system directly uses PV energy to power household loads at a higher efficiency to secure the daytime intensive energy consumption. An average daily generaiton of 180kWh can be achieved to power the whole villag. Coupled with Solar Mater MPPT solar charge controllers, the lithium battery storage system, which are mounted in the IP65-rated Power Rack cabinets, can be charged efficiently to restore the surplus energy generated during the day and discharged when the sun isn’t shining - so the villager won’t be left in the complete darkness at night ever again! On top of that, Kinergier Pro can regulate the output power of the PV inverters to prevent the batteries from being overcharged, significantly prolonging the battery life.

System Highlights

Kinergier Pro has a built-in low-frequency transformer, easy to support heavy loads with high surge power, able to run a whole village completely off-grid without a problem. When working with generator, it can control the generator start and stop smartly to reduce fuel consumption.

The whold system can be monitored and controlled via TBB NOVA online portal. Available with Web and App version, it provides an easy access to the system real-time data, allowing the owners to obtain live information on the performance, production and consumption of the mini-grid system.
